Privacy & how search works

Murmot combines results from several search engines. Your search text and selected settings are sent to those engines through our API. We do not forward your browser cookies or IP headers to them.

In your browser

This version uses no account, tracking cookies or persistent search history. Search terms appear in the page address so results can be shared; your browser history and hosting platforms may process that address. Opening a result or an original image contacts its website.

Images and suggestions

Result images are displayed through Murmot’s image service. Autocomplete sends what you type after a short pause. Suggestions come from providers, not a personal history.

Site icons also pass through Murmot. Our server requests them from Google using the result’s hostname, without sending your search text, browser cookies or IP headers.

Cached results and retained content

The API can cache exact searches and suggestions for up to one hour. It also collects returned document, media, suggestion and infobox content in a durable inventory, without a separate originating query, prefix or visitor association. Returned text can itself repeat a search. Deletion controls are not yet implemented.

Application monitoring records provider outcomes, response times and counts. Public release still requires review of hosting logs and retention policies.
